How to Choose Non-Slip Shoes for Restaurant and Kitchen Staff

Servers, cooks, and bussers spend whole shifts on floors that get wet, greasy, and crowded. The right shoes make the job safer and a lot more comfortable. Here is how to choose non-slip shoes for restaurant and kitchen work.

1. Start with a slip-resistant sole

The outsole is the most important part. Look for a deep, patterned tread designed for wet and oily floors. If a brand lists a tested slip-resistance rating, that is a good sign. If it does not, ask before you buy, and check what your employer requires.

2. Decide whether you need waterproof shoes

Kitchens and dish areas can soak through ordinary shoes. Waterproof or water-resistant uppers keep your feet dry and wipe clean after a spill. Front-of-house staff may prefer a lighter shoe that looks more like a regular work shoe.

3. Check for protective toe requirements

Some kitchens and loading areas require protective footwear. Ask your manager whether a steel toe is required before you buy. If it is, see our Slip-Resistant Steel Toe Work Shoes.

4. Choose comfort you can wear for a full shift

Cushioning, arch support, and a lightweight build matter more the longer you are on your feet. Try shoes on at the end of the day when your feet are largest, and leave room to wiggle your toes.

5. Get the size right

Too small causes blisters and sore feet, and too large makes it harder to move safely. If you are between sizes, choose the larger size, and check our size guide.

6. Replace them when the tread wears down

Worn tread means less grip. If the pattern on the sole looks flat or smooth, it is time for a new pair.
