How to Choose Non-Slip Shoes for Bartending
Share
If you work behind a bar, your shoes do more than any other part of your uniform. You are on your feet for hours, on floors that get wet, sticky, and slick with spilled drinks and melted ice. Here is how to pick a pair that keeps you steady and comfortable all shift.
1. Start with the outsole
The sole is what keeps you from slipping. Look for a slip-resistant outsole with a deep, patterned tread that can channel liquid away from under your foot. Labels like "non-slip" are used loosely, so if a brand lists a tested slip-resistance rating, that is a good sign. If a listing does not say how the grip was tested, ask before you buy.
2. Prioritize comfort you can wear for 8 to 12 hours
Cushioning, arch support, and a lightweight build matter more than style once you are three hours into a Saturday rush. Try shoes on at the end of the day, when your feet are at their largest, and walk around in them before you commit.
3. Choose a closed, wipe-clean upper
Most venues require closed-toe black shoes. A smooth upper wipes clean in seconds after a spill, while mesh and knit uppers absorb liquid and can hold odors.
4. Check your workplace requirements
Some venues require specific footwear, such as steel toe protection in kitchens or back-of-house areas. Ask your manager before you buy. If steel toe is required, see our Slip-Resistant Steel Toe Work Shoes.
5. Get the fit right
Shoes that are even slightly too small cause blisters and sore feet. If you are between sizes, choose the larger size, and check our size guide to measure your foot.
6. Know when to replace them
Tread wears down with use, and worn tread means less grip. If the pattern on the sole looks flat or smooth, it is time for a new pair.
