Walking into a new bar job with the wrong gear is stressful. Use this checklist to make sure you have everything you need before your first shift, and to keep your kit ready every week after. To print it, use your browser's print option and choose this page.
Clothing
- ☐ Pants in a dark color, with stretch (see the best pants for bartending)
- ☐ A spare pair of pants so you always have a clean set
- ☐ Shirt or top that fits your venue's dress code
- ☐ A spare shirt in your bag
- ☐ Belt, if your pants need one
Shoes
- ☐ Closed-toe, non-slip shoes (see how to choose non-slip shoes for bartending)
- ☐ Comfortable socks, and a spare pair
- ☐ Insoles, if you want extra cushioning
Apron and carry
- ☐ Apron that fits your style of service (see how to choose a bartender apron)
- ☐ Pouch or pockets for your tools
Tools in your pocket or apron
- ☐ Bar key (bottle opener and corkscrew)
- ☐ Two or three pens
- ☐ Small notepad
- ☐ Lighter, if your venue uses one
- ☐ Peeler or paring knife for garnishes, if your venue allows personal knives
Before every shift
- ☐ Uniform is clean and pressed
- ☐ Hair is tied back if needed
- ☐ Hands and nails are clean
- ☐ Water bottle packed
- ☐ Phone charged and set to silent
- ☐ Arrive early enough to set up your station
Ask your manager
- ☐ What is the dress code and are there required colors?
- ☐ Does the venue supply aprons or require your own?
- ☐ Are there rules about footwear, such as steel toe in back-of-house areas?
- ☐ Are personal tools like knives or lighters allowed?
